DIY Vanilla Vodka
I honestly believe that if my mind was switched with the mind of a five-year-old child, no one would notice. Not my colleagues, nor my boyfriend nor even my dad. I’ve been feeling a bit ‘bleh’ recently and was going over everything in my mind this morning. I have a full time job in social media, I do additional travel copywriting freelance work, I run a food blog, I’ve co-authored a book which is due out very soon and you know what? I’m bored. I started thinking – maybe writing isn’t for me. Maybe I need something more exciting in my life. Something like… PICMONKEY HAS NEW CHRISTMAS OVERLAYS!! I must cover everything in snowmen, holly and Christmas writing!! And I have been cheery ever since. So I apologize for the use of Christmas overlays in this post, but the photo was kinda dull and I thought it would do me some good if I indulged my five-year-old mentality.
Anyway. DIY vanilla vodka! Why pay for expensive branded vanilla vodka when you can make your own for a fraction of the cost? Maybe you’re struggling to think of a Christmas gift for someone (you can never have too much alcohol during the holidays) or maybe your short of cash and promised you’d bring something good to a friend’s Christmas party, or maybe you’re just fond of vanilla vodka. Whatever it is – find your reason to make this! Just a note: the flavors take around a couple of weeks to infuse, so if you are planning on bringing this to a party or giving it as a gift, you’d better get a move on!
Ingredients
- 1 bottle of vodka - size and quality don't really matter
- 2 vanilla pods
Instructions
- Using a sharp knife, score a line down the centre of each vanilla pod.
- Unscrew the lid of the vodka bottle, pop the vanilla pods in the bottom and tightly screw the lid back on.
- Store somewhere cool and dark for around 2-3 weeks, or until the vanilla flavor has fully infused. Remove the vanilla pods when you're happy with the flavor.

Is a vanilla pod the same thing as a vanilla bean? Should you leave the seeds in or just use the bean? Thank you!
Hi Janine!
Yes, vanilla pods are the same as vanilla beans. I removed them from the packet, ran a knife down the centre and threw the whole things in.
Let me know if you need any more help :)
5 year old minds are wildly creative, so indulge away!
Vanilla and snowflake overlays make anything better ;)
Thank you for partying with the Wildly Original Crowd.

Wow, you make me feel a bit bad about my slacker self. I haven’t done half as much and I am way too content. :D For what its worth, I love your writing and I’m all over those picmonkey overlays. :D Thanks for sharing on BeColorful. My slacker self will probably buy the vanilla vodka but I know a lot of readers will be inspired. I will work on dialing up my ambitions. :D

sorry about all those happy faces. Wow. I just reread my comment and was thinking. So juvenile, but I guess it was my attempt at keeping it light.

I love smilies and always over-use them myself. I don’t think they’re juvenile at all – how else are we meant to get happiness and joviality across? :)
[...] filling, you’re going to be very disappointed. I may be able to find the time to make my own vanilla vodka and Kahlua, but I absolutely positively do not have the time to make mincemeat from scratch! Unless [...]
